Masters Games provides pins in a good skittle hardwood as an alternative to the hideously expensive Boxwood. Over the years we’ve had them made from Beech, Rubberwood, Maple, Purpleheart and more recently Oak and Ash, depending upon availability. Cheeses are made in the same material.



These pins are noticeably lighter than boxwood and players who are used to the weight of boxwood may not find them satisfactory. On the other hand, Masters Traditional Games did some play-testing in 2017 with a batch of Oak wood pins and cheeses and we found that they played very nicely. The playing characteristic is different but we had the cheeses made marginally thicker to increase the cheese/pin weight ratio. The result is a set that is perhaps a smidgeon more generous that a standard Boxwood set and therefore a great option for beginners, home users and for non-league pub games.



Northamptonshire style is the more common pin shape. The pins are approximately 6 inches (160mm) high. The cheeses fit snugly in the hand at around 3 1/2 inches (90mm) diameter. Pins are provided polished, oiled or varnished for additional protection.



Please note that these pins tend to dent more readily than boxwood and will not last as long. For leagues that play seriously and/or very regularly, they may not last a season and Boxwood is a better bet. But for less intensive use, they will be fine.
