Questions about games:
Please can you send me a catalogue?
Our website is our shop and our catalogue.
Masters Traditional Games does not publish a paper catalogue or brochure. This reduces our costs which we then pass on to you, the customer.
You can print off pages for use off-line. Or, if you need a print of a page or 2 and do not have access to a printer, let us know and we’ll post you a print-out.
Can you recommend some games for a single player?
What games are from the Roman / Medieval / Georgian / Victorian era? Etc.
We do have some traditional games categorised by historical significance including games from Ancient Rome, the Medieval Period and other historical eras.

Zero-rating and VAT-exempt orders:
I want you to deliver my order to a UK address whereupon I will export it outside the UK. How can I avoid paying VAT?
Are you a member of the VAT Retail Export Scheme?
Sorry we aren’t a member of the VAT Retail Export Scheme because we are a mail-order company. So we cannot issue a VAT 407 form for a customer to claim back VAT. The only way to avoid VAT is outlined below:
The way that we deal with zero-rated exports when shipping to a UK address is as follows: We always charge VAT when shipping to a UK address except in the case of a US Military base. However, we refund this as soon as the recipient supplies documentary commercial evidence that the goods were dispatched to the overseas address (see the question below for more info on this).
Also we would advise that someone checks the goods upon arrival in the UK because if the goods turn out to be damaged upon arrival in your country, we will not be able to offer any refund.
I am placing an order for an Embassy, Consulate, NATO force or similar international organisation within the EU. How can I avoid paying VAT?
There is a bilateral agreement for this situation which is quite straightforward. We will omit VAT from the order as long as one of the following applies:
- you have a written contract or purchase order from an authorised US visiting forces contracting officer
- payment is made with a Government Purchase Card (GPC)
- payment is made with a Procurement (PRO) card
- you are supplying goods from a Customs or excise warehouse
- or the goods have been imported and processed under the Inward Processing Relief (IPR) regime – see Notice 221 Inward Processing Relief
What documents are sufficient evidence for proof of export?
There are 3 forms of documentary commercial evidence that will be acceptable to the British government viz:
- C88 customs form with a customs stamp on it that shows a description of the goods + the name and address of the customer.
- Authenticated seaway bill / air waybill that shows a description of the goods + the name and address of the customer.
- Authenticated Bill of Lading that shows a description of the goods + the name and address of the customer.
Sales invoices, courier invoices and any other forms of documentation will not be sufficient for us to zero-rate the payment and refund the VAT.
Orders including VAT - exempt equipment for disabled people
We are allowed to zero-rate the supply of a product to a disabled customer as long as certain criteria are met as follows:
1. A declaration by the manufacturer that the product concerned was “designed solely for use by disabled people”.
2. A document that shows the eligibility of the customer for disabled person’s relief. To achieve this, we have a form that we can send for you to complete and return.
3. Must be for personal or domestic use.
Contact us if you think that your order may meet the above criteria. Please note that obtaining the required declaration from a manufacturer is outside our control. We are happy to request it but if the manufacturer does not produce the document, there may be nothing more we can do.

I am designing/making a board game or some other game for my GCSE project. Can you give some advice or send some information about the products that you make?
Sorry but no, because we aren’t a manufacturer, we are a retail shop. We occasionally have things made for us by a craftsman but only very small scale, high quality items – no boxed games. So we don’t have any information on designing or making games and we never actually make anything ourselves.
Likewise, we can’t help you with information about materials or construction of the products that we sell. If we know what a game is made from, it will already be on our website. Otherwise, we just don’t know.
All the games that we sell are based upon old traditional games. We sell hardly any modern games like Monopoly or Cluedo; although we do have a selection of Scrabble games.
Please note also that we don’t have any paper catalogue or brochure. We are an Internet-only, mail-order shop.
It’s quite easy to find large game manufacturers on the web. Just type “game manufacturers” into Google and have a look at the top 20 results. Also, if you go to the search engine “Excite” www.excite.co.uk, they have a big list of Board Game Manufacturers. Here are a few manufacturers you could try.
- Hasbro – the corporate games giant who have swallowed up other well known companies like Spear, Parker and Waddington
- Galt
- Gibsons Games
- Drumond Park
- Jaques of London
Please can you send me your sales figures for a particular game or type of game?
Sorry, but we don’t like to give out our sales figures or the sources of our products to anyone who asks, as a general policy. Otherwise, our competitors could use the information to their advantage.
